The fashion industry is broadly divided into four categories viz design, manufacturing, marketing and promotion and retail sales.

  • The design profile includes jobs such as designers, pattern makers, sketching assistants who create and revise designs and look after all components of a garment.
  • The manufacturing aspect includes profiles such as apparel workers, dressmakers, seamstresses, tailors and textile workers who produce the accessories and garments designed by others.
  • The marketing and promotion arena encompasses marketers, photographers, models and stylists who help a designer depict and sell accessories and garments to a retailer.
  • The retail sales field includes jobs such as buyers, merchandise planners, salespeople, and retail managers who buy the accessories and garments from the designer and then sell them to the people.

Also known as accessory designer or a clothing designer, fashion designer designs new accessories and garments. Pattern Maker

They are also called fabric pattern maker or an apparel pattern maker takes a fashion designer’s design and breaks it down into a series of pieces.

Pattern makers are responsible for ensuring assembling of accessories and garments by sewer and manufacturers.


  • examine each design to determine the best way to break the pattern down into a series of pieces that can be reassembled,
  • make paper outlines of each part of the design to make sure that the design can be reassembled correctly,
  • make a set of instructions that a manufacturer can use to reassemble the design from the pattern,
  • make notes on the pattern to indicate where each piece should be attached and where each feature such as button, pocket, collar, should be located,
  • determine the best way for a manufacturer to use the pattern in order to produce as many accessories and garments as possible with as few materials as possible,
  • talk to fashion designers and manufacturers about the designs and patterns
  • and use charts, computers and other similar equipment to modify the pattern so that a manufacturer can have several different variations to reproduce in different sizes.

The amount that a pattern maker earns is also heavily based on the area in which the individual works. A pattern maker may be able to make significantly more than usual if he or she works for a major company or label.

Fashion Stylist

A stylist is responsible to improve the overall appearance of an actor, model, or other client through styling techniques including makeup. Stylists decide overall appearance and requirement of a client to zero down styling techniques and makeup to present the desired look. They also suggest clients about the makeup that they should use to jazz up the look of garments and accessories to be presented.

The salary of a stylist depends on profile of employer, clients, skills and reputation. A stylist may be able to make significantly more than usual if he or she works for a major model or celebrity, has done course in fashion styling or fashion design, and is an industry stalwart.

The broad categories of styling are: makeup artists and personal stylists. A makeup artist specializes in the application of makeup, and a personal stylist specializes in improving an individual’s image and personality through accessories, clothing, hair styling and makeup.

Visual Merchandiser

Visual merchandisers are responsible for making sure that the customers are able to see every accessory and garment.

Fashion Marketer

Considered less glamorous, a fashion marketer creates advertising campaigns, marketing plans that an individual or company employ to sell its products. Fashion marketers are responsible for making sure that each accessory and garment is presented to the retailers or consumers in the best way possible.


  • chalk out plans after analyzing current trends,
  • determine which age group, gender or geographical area is more likely to buy the product and collate information about target buyers,
  • draft advertisements and marketing plans to showcase the best of a particular design and convince people to purchase the garment.

They also create a budget for marketing campaign; review and edit advertisements to convey the desired message to the target audience. A degree in marketing boosts the prospects of a fashion marketer. They receive extra perks and bonus if advertising and marketing campaigns are well received and push the sales of garments and accessories.

Fashion Salesperson

Also called retail salesperson or representative, they sell garments and accessories to retailers or consumers. Salespeople convince people to buy the products that an individual or a company designs.


  • examine the needs of each consumer or retailer to determine the accessories or garments that best meet those needs,
  • contact customers to discuss some of the new designs that they may be interested in,
  • discuss payment and delivery options,
  • explain the qualities of the various garments or accessories that are available for sale,

  • help consumers try on accessories and garments,
  • invite retailers to fashion shows so that they can get a better idea of how the garment will look on an individual and tag the price of each accessory or garment.

The profile of client, employer and experience of salesperson determine his or her salary. They also earn a sizeable amount of commission and other perks.

It is the most glamorous aspect of the fashion world. They showcase and wear various garments and accessories that an individual or a company design and promote. Models are responsible for letting people see the way a specific design looks on an individual.

  • exercise regularly and watch their diets to maintain their figures,

Seamstress or Tailor

A seamstress is a female fashion professional who makes accessories and garments and a tailor is a male fashion professional who does similar job. They are responsible for giving concrete shape to designs and patterns.

Fashion Photographer

A fashion photographer, also known as commercial photographer, create portfolio of garments, accessories that an individual or company designs as well as pictures of the models wearing those garments and accessories.

Fashion photographers capture the best looks of garment, accessory and models wearing such creations.


  • adjust lighting of the room and camera settings,
  • make folios containing the best pictures of each segment,
  • explain models how they should pose for pictures; store digital copies of each picture,
  • test cameras to make sure that they are in working order before each photo shoot,
  • use backdrops, digital cameras, film cameras, tripods, and other similar equipment to take pictures
  • and use computers to edit pictures to lend best possible look to garment and models.

A fashion photographer’s salary depends on skills, experience and nature of client.

Fashion Retail Manager

A fashion retail manager, or store manager, oversees the activities of a fashion store. Retail managers look after day-to-day work of people in store such as cashiers, salespeople, visual merchandiser, designers and housekeeping staff.


  • implement sales plans,
  • discuss problems and new sales strategies with the store’s employees as well as with seniors,
  • establish a budget for the store and sales target,
  • help employees and customers; handle customers’ grievances, make daily reports of the store and train subordinates.

A fashion retail manager in a big fashion store is likey to earn more than those employed in small retail chains.

Fashion Buyer

A fashion buyer is also called fashion purchasing agent or merchandise manager, identify and purchase accessories, garments and supplies needed by fashion design labels and retail stores. Buyers try to procure supplies in least possible rates.


  • keep a tab on inventory items ensuring smooth provision of supplies and products,
  • examine inventory databases and sales records to determine how much the store or company should expect to sell and purchase,
  • establish agreements with suppliers to purchase goods at a fixed rate or a lower rate than the supplier typically charges and look for suppliers that may offer a similar-quality product at a lower cost.

The salary of a fashion buyer depends on brands with which they work.
